It is the traveling part of the hoisting system of a rig. It is connected to the crown block with steel wire ropes to achieve round trip operation.

The traveling block is the mobile component of the drilling rig’s hoisting system, suspended from the crown block by multiple lines of drilling wire rope. Manufactured in compliance with API Spec 8C, this heavy-duty assembly consists of multiple sheaves mounted on high-capacity bearings within a fabricated steel housing. The traveling block moves vertically within the derrick as the drawworks spools or releases drilling line, providing the mechanical advantage necessary to lift and lower the drill string, casing, and other heavy loads. The bottom of the traveling block is equipped with a clevis or bail for attaching the drilling hook or top drive, enabling direct connection to the drill string.
